Helmar Rudolph interviewing Sheryl Atkisson

HR:
Sheryl, your career in investigative journalism is both impressive and inspiring. What initially drew you to investigative journalism, and how has your passion for uncovering the truth evolved over the years?
SA
:

My interest in investigative journalism stemmed from a deep-seated belief in the power of information and the role of the press in holding those in power accountable. Over the years, my passion for uncovering the truth has only deepened, especially as I've witnessed the increasing challenges and obstacles that come with trying to report facts in an era of misinformation. This journey has reinforced my commitment to pursuing stories that matter, despite the pressures and pushback.

HR:
In your experience, what are the most significant challenges facing journalists today, and how can they be overcome?
SA
:

The biggest challenges include media bias, censorship, and the economic pressures that influence editorial decisions. Overcoming these requires a steadfast commitment to ethical journalism, critical thinking, and independence. Journalists must prioritize truth over narrative, be willing to question all sides, and seek diverse sources. Cultivating a direct relationship with the audience, independent of traditional media platforms, can also help in maintaining journalistic integrity.

HR:
Your investigative work often brings you into conflict with powerful entities. How do you maintain your resolve and focus in the face of such challenges?
SA
:

Maintaining resolve comes from a fundamental belief in the role of journalism in democracy. Focusing on the importance of the story and the people it affects, rather than the pressures or potential backlash, helps me stay grounded. Support from the public, who value and rely on independent journalism, also reinforces my commitment to continue, despite the obstacles.

HR:
How do you ensure the accuracy and fairness of your investigations, especially when dealing with controversial topics?
SA
:

Ensuring accuracy and fairness involves rigorous fact-checking, consulting multiple sources, and always seeking the other side's perspective. I approach each investigation with an open mind, letting the facts lead the way rather than preconceived notions. Transparency about sources and methods, when possible, and a readiness to correct mistakes are also crucial for maintaining credibility.

HR:
What role do you believe investigative journalism plays in shaping public opinion and policy?
SA
:

Investigative journalism plays a critical role in informing the public about issues that may not otherwise receive attention, thereby shaping public opinion and, potentially, policy. By bringing to light facts and perspectives that challenge the status quo, investigative journalism can prompt discussions, influence policymakers, and lead to reforms. It's about providing the information necessary for the public to make informed decisions and hold their leaders accountable.

HR:
How has the digital revolution affected investigative journalism, for better or worse?
SA
:

The digital revolution has been a double-edged sword. On the positive side, it has democratized information, giving journalists access to a wealth of data and the ability to reach a global audience. However, it has also contributed to the spread of misinformation and diluted the impact of investigative findings amid a sea of content. The challenge is to leverage technology to enhance investigative efforts while combating the negative aspects that undermine credible journalism.

HR:
In your view, what qualities make an investigative journalist successful?
SA
:

A successful investigative journalist must possess curiosity, persistence, and a thick skin. Curiosity drives the search for truth, persistence is essential for navigating the often lengthy and complex process of investigation, and a thick skin helps in dealing with criticism and pushback. Additionally, integrity and a commitment to ethical standards are non-negotiable qualities that underpin the credibility and impact of one's work.

HR:
How do you navigate the ethical dilemmas that can arise during an investigation?
SA
:

Navigating ethical dilemmas involves adhering to a core set of journalistic principles: do no harm, seek the truth, and report it as fully as possible. When faced with difficult decisions, I weigh the public interest against potential harm, consult with colleagues, and consider the long-term implications of publishing sensitive information. It's about finding a balance between the need to inform and the responsibility to protect.

HR:
What advice would you give to young journalists entering the field today?
SA
:

To young journalists, I'd say: cultivate a passion for the truth, develop a strong ethical foundation, and be prepared to stand alone. Embrace the opportunities presented by new technologies but remain vigilant against the pitfalls. Always question, verify, and remember that the core of journalism is not about popularity or clicks but about informing the public and contributing to the betterment of society.

HR:
Looking ahead, what future projects or areas of investigation are you most excited about?
SA
:

I'm excited about exploring the intersections between technology and privacy, the influence of big tech on public discourse, and the evolving landscape of media manipulation. These areas are critical for understanding the current and future state of our democratic societies. The digital age presents new challenges and opportunities for investigative journalism, and I'm committed to uncovering the truths that lie at the heart of these complex issues. My goal is to continue shining a light on the unseen forces shaping our world, empowering the public with information that prompts action and accountability.

I hope people realize the immense power of their thoughts and how these can shape their reality. The Master Key System teaches that by harnessing our thoughts constructively, we can achieve our highest potential. My goal is for individuals to understand that personal empowerment starts within and that they possess the tools to create positive change in their lives and the world around them.

SA
:
Personal development often requires confronting internal challenges. What advice do you have for those struggling to overcome their barriers?
HR:

The first step is recognizing that barriers are often mental constructs. I advise individuals to practice self-awareness, identifying negative thought patterns and beliefs that hold them back. It's crucial to replace these with positive affirmations and goals that align with their true desires. Persistence, patience, and a willingness to step out of one's comfort zone are essential for overcoming these challenges.

SA
:
How do you see the intersection of personal development and societal change?

Personal development and societal change are deeply interconnected. As individuals work on themselves, gaining clarity, purpose, and empowerment, they naturally contribute to a more conscious, compassionate society. SA
:
In an era of rapid technological advancement, how can we maintain a human-centric approach to growth and development?
HR:

By ensuring that technology serves as a tool for enhancing human capabilities and connections rather than replacing them. It's vital to prioritize ethical considerations and the well-being of individuals in the development and implementation of technology. Maintaining a human-centric approach requires a balanced perspective, valuing emotional intelligence, creativity, and interpersonal relationships as much as we value technological progress.

SA
:
Your work emphasizes the transformative power of positive thinking. How can someone begin to shift their mindset in a practical way?
HR:

Shifting one's mindset begins with awareness and choice. Start by observing your thoughts and identifying patterns that are negative or self-limiting. Practicing gratitude, focusing on solutions rather than problems, and setting positive intentions for each day are practical steps. It's also helpful to surround yourself with positive influences—people, books, and environments that reflect the mindset you wish to adopt.

SA
:
Can you share an example from your own life where applying the Master Key System principles led to a significant personal breakthrough?
HR:

A significant breakthrough came when I applied the principles to overcome my fear of public speaking. By visualizing successful outcomes, using affirmations, and focusing on the value I wanted to provide, I gradually shifted my mindset from fear to confidence. This not only improved my speaking abilities but also opened new opportunities for sharing my work with larger audiences, profoundly impacting my career and personal growth.

SA
:

HR:

Resilience is crucial for personal development; it's the ability to bounce back from setbacks and continue moving forward. Cultivating resilience involves embracing challenges as opportunities for growth, maintaining a positive outlook, and developing a strong support network. It also requires self-care, allowing oneself to experience and learn from emotions without being overwhelmed by them.

SA

The trend towards mindfulness, wellness, and sustainable living reflects a deeper understanding of the importance of harmony between our internal states and external actions. Additionally, the use of technology to personalize and enhance growth experiences offers innovative ways to support individuals on their development journeys.

Remarks

Helmar: Unfortunately, the last answer is total nonsense and shows the limits of AI, as it cannot look into people's minds. My upcoming projects revolve around cartomancy ("Sacred Symbols"). They will bring this subject into the public eye, away from the niche it currently occupies. This will be effected via a mobile app as well as different methods to utilize the knowledge contained within via an API, so that other websites or services can make use of it.

They will also revolve around the English-language market rather than the German one I've been attending to since 2007. The MKS will keep playing a significant role, but other topics will get integrated. Also, I may shift towards creating turn-key projects that I then offer for sale rather than trying to run them myself. And now you know more than even most people close to me.
